The California Writers Exchange contest introduces emerging writers from California to the New York literary community and provides them a network for professional advancement. Every third year, writers in California are invited to submit manuscripts. Judges review the entries and select a winning poet and fiction writer. Winners are flown to New York City for an all-expenses-paid, weeklong trip to meet with literary agents, editors, publishers, and writers, and to give a public reading.

Walking Manhattan: Central Park

Walking Manhattan: Central Park

Today was a very retrospective day. It finally hit me that this dream had actually come true. If for some reason I had to leave tomorrow, this experience will have already exceeded my expectations.

I was standing on the jogging path in Central Park, looking over the lake at the skyline of the East Side. In the background a violinist was playing and I could hear children laughing in the playground. A perfect setting to start the tears flowing, wouldn’t you say? .....

Couple arrested following Lodi throat slashing

LODI, CA - A man and woman were arrested on Monday following a stabbing of a man on the 2400 block of Eilers Lane in Lodi.

According to Corporal Dale Eubanks of the Lodi Police Dept., officers responded to a call of a stabbing at the home on Eilers Ln. and found a 19-year-old man suffering from two stab wounds to his back and a lacerated throat. The stabbing victim and several witnesses were able to provide a description of the suspected stabber, his girlfriend and the car in which they drove away.

While supporting officers were enroute to the scene of the stabbing, they saw a vehicle matching the victim's description driving in the opposite direction and turned to pursue. The driver of the vehicle, Samantha Steman, refused to stop and fled until driving into a cul de sac where she was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and evading police, said Eubanks.

Skydiver is critical after stumbling during landing

ACAMPO, CA - A skydiver is in critical condition after witnesses said he lost his footing and hit his head in a field at the Parachute Center skydiving location near Lodi on Monday afternoon.

Woodbridge Fire Lt. Dan Schmierer said the victim, a man from Portugal in his 30s, was airlifted to Kaiser Hospital. Even though he was a group, he was experienced enough to do a non-tandem jump.

Schmierer said the parachute did deploy, but the man somehow stumbled while landing. Officials believe he may have broken his femur and injured his back and neck.

"It seems to be more and more common," said Schmierer about the accident. "I don't know if it's because more people are coming to jump or more people are trying to push the envelope."

Schmierer said about 15 to 30 similar accidents happen at Parachute Center every year. The management did not want to comment on the accident.
